Green-fingered pupils get stuck in!

Green-fingered Cwmbran pupils have been putting the finishing touches to a new nature area at their school by helping to plant a range of native trees.

Staff and children at Woodlands Community Primary School, Thornhill, enlisted the help of experts at BTCV Cymru – the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers – to create the new nature area which also includes pathways and a new pond.

BTCV Cymru and Western Power Distribution, the South Wales electricity business, have formed an alliance which enables schools like Woodlands Primary, who are seeking to enhance their communities by planting native species of trees, shrubs and hedges, to get practical assistance and advice.

BTCV’s Nicola Sumner Smith explained: “The pupils were brilliant and really got stuck in by helping to put the finishing touches to the new nature area. They planted silver birch, oak and alder trees which will help soften the newly landscaped area at the school.”
